The Barranco neighborhood, is one of the smallest districts of Lima, however, it is also the bohemian zone of Lima, because it is the place of residence of many local artists, something that you can feel when you walk through its streets. Formerly it was a village of fishermen, who through the (descent of the baths) accessed the sea to undertake their daily activities. In 1875 it was officially recognized as a district, although with the name of San José de Surco. The neighborhood of Barranco as it is a district with many picturesque streets and for being one of the points of the Lima movement, which is why it is known today as (the bohemian district of Lima), district where poets have lived and the place where Creole music has also been present. Today Barranco is one of the districts that, I’ve been able to meet and love it little by little as well as feeling privileged to be able to walk and in a matter of minutes to reach its sea to quietly watch the sunset with a book in hand or just listen to music with my headphones while watching in the distance people bathe in the sea or surf.
There is a tradition with the bridge of the sighs(puente de los suspiros) of Barranco, if it is the first time you see it then you have to walk the entire bridge and make a wish, walk holding your breath, no cheating! The bridge is not that long, so cross it and ask for your wish and I hope that it will be fulfilled. In the heart of Barranco is the Bridge of Sighs, a traditional wooden bridge wrapped in an air of romance, for being the site that started countless love affairs in Lima. The story also tells that whoever crosses the bridge holding his breath, will fulfill the desire he asks. The bridge was initially built in 1876 and after the Pacific War, which completely destroyed it, it has undergone a series of reconstructions until now, but it is still part of the tourist icons of Lima.Over time, it became the summer resort of upper class families, who installed their large beach houses in this district. Nowadays Barranco is one of the boldest and safest districts of Lima, with a variety of lodging options such as hotels and hostels, so staying here is a good alternative. On a tour of San Martin Avenue you will find a mixture of residences, boulevards, hotels, art galleries and restaurants. Until you reach the central ravine square, around which most of the tourist activity in the district is concentrated. In this artistic district, you will find some of the main museums of Lima, such as the Pedro de Osma Museum and the Museo de Contemporary art.
Like Miraflores, Barranco has a boardwalk with a beautiful view of the sea and it is the favorite place for those who like to enjoy the beautiful summery sunsets. You cannot miss the opportunity to take a walk along this boardwalk. The flagship place of this district is the Bridge of Sighs, (Puente de los Suspiros) one of the most visited tourist attractions in Lima. Barranco is a district that is visited by many people from Lima, especially on weekends since there are many clubs and bars here. However, the district began many years ago with a base of tranquility and in the distance of what It was Lima.
