But those aren\u2019t the only highlights awaiting you. On this free tour you\u2019ll also climb aboard a beautifully restored electric tram carriage<\/strong>, once linking Lima and Barranco between 1904 and 1965, before gazing out at the sweeping Pacific Ocean<\/strong> views from the striking Bresciani lookout<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The route also takes you to Bodega & Bar Piselli<\/strong>, founded in 1915 \u2013 a charming time capsule that looks just like an Old West bars<\/strong>. A republican-style mansion with art nouveau stained glass<\/strong> and spacious gardens, built in 1906 by architect Santiago Basurco, is today home to a museum that showcases the remarkable archaeological and artistic collection of philanthropist Pedro de Osma<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in Lima, Osma (1868\u20131936) and his family used this Barranco residence<\/strong> as their summer retreat. With its distinctive features, the house is a fine example of the tastes and architectural styles<\/strong> that shaped the capital in the early 20th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its halls display pre-Hispanic objects<\/strong> dating back to the 5th century, along with a variety of colonial artworks. Among the highlights are paintings from the Cusco School of Art<\/strong>, portraying saints and virgins in striking detail.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s exactly what awaits you on the fourth block of Avenida Pedro de Osma, where a 19th-century mansion <\/strong>has housed the Museo Mario (MATE)<\/strong> since 2012. Inside, you\u2019ll find some of the finest works of Peru\u2019s most celebrated photographer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in Lima in 1954<\/strong>, Testino\u2019s photography is renowned for its sophistication, dynamism, and contemporary style. With great skill, he manages to capture in a single shot the very essence of the people he portrays<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His sessions with Princess Diana<\/strong>, Madonna, Gucci, Versace, and Kate Moss \u2013 to name just a few \u2013 highlight the artistic mastery of Testino<\/strong>, widely recognised as \u201cthe master of fashion photography.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In 2023, a Peruvian restaurant claimed the top spot on The World\u2019s 50 Best list<\/strong>. Its name?\u2026 Yes, you guessed it: Central \u2013 one of the stops on our free walking tour through Barranco walk: Off the beaten path<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the visit is only from the outside \u2014 reservations are booked months in advance \u2014 it\u2019s the perfect chance for your guide to share the story and philosophy behind this award-winning restaurant<\/strong>, founded in 2009 by chef Virgilio Mart\u00ednez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Central is far more than just a restaurant. It\u2019s a journey into Peru\u2019s biodiversity<\/strong> in search of new ingredients. Its culinary vision is built on tasting menus crafted with the finest flavours and ingredients<\/strong> from each of the country\u2019s ecological levels.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Before cars and buses took over the streets<\/strong>, a \u201cmodern and speedy transport system<\/strong> would make its way into the still small seaside town of Barranco along what is now Avenida Reducto in Miraflores, and then follow the route of Avenida Grau\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That \u201cmodern and speedy system,\u201d as recalled on the Barranco Vintage fan page, was the electric tram<\/strong> \u2014 an urban transport service that ran in Lima from 1904 until 1965. Back in the 19th century, however, its carriages were pulled by horses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And why bring up this piece of history? The answer is simple: on the free tour, you\u2019ll come across a beautifully restored carriage<\/strong> of the once iconic electric tram<\/strong>. So get ready to travel \u2014 if only in your imagination \u2014 back to the Barranco of days gone by.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t a film set, nor the backdrop for a Western where cowboys and outlaws face off<\/strong>. There\u2019s no scene being shot here of two rogues demanding one more drink from the barman before stepping outside for a dusty street duel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But let your imagination run free<\/strong> at Bodega & Bar Piselli \u2013 a place rooted in the past which, with its d\u00e9cor, wooden bar and tables<\/strong>, and shelves crammed with bottles, feels just like a saloon from the Wild West<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 1915<\/strong> by Angelo Piselli, the bar even welcomed John Wayne<\/strong> himself, husband of the Peruvian actress Pilar Pallete<\/strong>. Other distinguished visitors included Peruvian writers Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Eguren, Abraham Valdelomar,<\/strong> Juan Gonzalo Rose, and Mart\u00edn de la Fuente.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

On the fa\u00e7ade of this lively and traditional cultural centre<\/strong>, you\u2019ll discover the life of poet Juan Parra del Riego<\/strong>. Born in Huancayo in 1894, his family settled in Lima in 1902, where he attended secondary school in Barranco<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At just 18, Juan won a poetry competition<\/strong> organised by the Barranco municipality. That moment marked the beginning of his literary career \u2013 one that would make him a key figure in Uruguay (where he passed away in 1925) and a celebrated name in Pari<\/strong>s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After his death, his niece, Gloria Recavarren Parra<\/strong>, founded the Juan Parra del Riego Cultural Centre in the 1980s<\/strong>. Since then, it has become a cornerstone in promoting the arts within Lima\u2019s bohemian district<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
