Peru celebrated the centenary of its independence<\/strong> with the inauguration of a square in honour of Don Jos\u00e9 de San Mart\u00edn. The great general, born in Yapey\u00fa, Argentina, would go on to declare that \u201cPeru is free and independent by the general will of its people\u201d on 28th July 1821<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

San Mart\u00edn\u2019s equestrian statue<\/strong> stands proudly in this urban space, surrounded by striking buildings with French-inspired architecture<\/strong>. These elegant constructions reflect the changes in architectural styles that emerged in the republican era of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gran Hotel Bol\u00edvar<\/h4><\/div>

It\u2019s no coincidence that the Bol\u00edvar Hotel stands right in front of Plaza San Mart\u00edn<\/em>. According to history, President Augusto B. Legu\u00eda chose the name with the intention of honouring both of Peru\u2019s liberators<\/strong> in the same space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After all, \u201cin front of a San Mart\u00edn, there can only be a Bol\u00edvar,\u201d<\/strong> President Legu\u00eda is said to have declared in 1924<\/strong>\u2014the year Lima\u2019s first modern hotel opened its doors. To this day, the building preserves its timeless Art Deco elegance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, its spacious and comfortable rooms have welcomed countless notable figures<\/strong> from the worlds of politics, the arts and sport, including John Wayne, Clark Gable, Ernest Hemingway<\/strong>, William Faulkner, Jorge Luis Borges, Mick Jagger<\/strong>, and Igor Stravinsky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is one of the most iconic hotels in Lima\u2019s Historic Centre<\/strong>. In 1835, French merchant Pedro Mauyri opened an inn at the corner of Jir\u00f3n Carabaya and Jir\u00f3n Ucayali, just a short walk from Jir\u00f3n de la Uni\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, the inn evolved into a charming and attractive hotel<\/strong>, known not only for its comfortable rooms but also for its welcoming bar\u2014considered one of the birthplaces of the pisco sour<\/strong>, Peru\u2019s most famous cocktail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story of colonial and republican Lima<\/strong> began in this very urban space on 18th January 1535<\/strong>. That day\u2014memorable for the Spanish and uncertain for the original inhabitants of the R\u00edmac Valley\u2014the City of Kings was founded<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the conquistador Francisco Pizarro<\/strong> who led the founding ceremony and laid out the design and land distribution of the new city. This marked the beginning of what we now know as Lima\u2019s Historic Centre<\/strong> and Cercado district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much has changed in Peru\u2019s capital since then, but the importance of the Plaza de Armas<\/strong>\u2014or Main Square\u2014remains, as many of the country\u2019s most important institutions<\/strong> are located around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you arrive at the square, take a moment to admire its old fountain<\/strong>, and the architecture of the Government Palace<\/strong>, the Basilica Cathedral, the City Hall, and the beautiful arcades that frame the historic heart of the City of Kings.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Casa de la Literatura<\/h4><\/div>

In 1912, the Desamparados train station<\/strong> was inaugurated. Monumental and imposing, it is considered the first modern building<\/strong> in Lima\u2019s Historic Centre. At the time, Peru\u2019s capital had only around 150,000 inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the years, various circumstances led to the cancellation of passenger rail services<\/strong>, and the station\u2019s grand halls were eventually transformed into a sanctuary for Peruvian literature<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The House of Peruvian Literature opened its doors in 2009<\/strong>, with the mission of celebrating and promoting the work of national writers. In its exhibition and reading rooms, you\u2019ll find yourself drawn into the world of Peruvian poets, novelists and thinkers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peruvian literature is incredibly rich and diverse, offering deep insight into the country\u2019s many voices and perspectives. Writers such as C\u00e9sar Vallejo, Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Arguedas<\/strong>, and Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa<\/strong> are read and admired around the world.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
