This Inca citadel houses several temples that stand out above the rest and they were used as worshiping places for their main deities such as the Sun and the Moon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-main-characteristics-of-inca-temples\">What are the main characteristics of Inca temples?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The worshiping sanctuaries of the Andean men from the Inca period, had an advanced architecture by perfectly interlocking the stones, roofed with straw(natural fiber).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depending on the type of temple, but if it was a temple dedicated for astronomical observations, the priests in charge of those shrines had to be knowledge about the sidereal space themes in order to determine the seasons of the year and thus contribute to the <a href=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtoursperu.com\/en\/blog\/why-there-was-no-starvation-neither-malnutrition-back-in-the-inca-period\/\">good practice of agriculture<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most Inca temples were built at elevated areas or visible locations to resemble domination over the other buildings and at the same time protection for the inhabitants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Inca people had many temples dedicated to the sun, the moon, the stars, the lightning, the rainbow, the puma, the condor, the serpent, the pacha mama(mother earth), the pacha tata (the father earth or the rain), etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Before visiting Machu Picchu, check out all the must-know information below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-the-temple-of-sun\">1. The Temple of the Condor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This enclosure has a <strong>unique design<\/strong>, the head of the Condor is carved on stone on the ground, if you wish to see the wings, just stand in front of the Cordor head (2 meters away) and look straight ahead, only in this way you will spot the wings of the Condor which formed by the two big rocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large advgb-dyn-843e471e\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"8145\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtoursperu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/templos-de-machu-picchu-condor-2.jpg\" alt=\"Templos de Machu Picchu\" class=\"wp-image-8145\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Head of the Condor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large advgb-dyn-0d6a0ff0\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"8136\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtoursperu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/blogestemplos-de-machu-picchu-condor-1.jpg\" alt=\"Templos de Machu Picchu\" class=\"wp-image-8136\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Condor Wings<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that not only the concept of duality was applied by the Incas to better understand the functioning of the world, but the <strong>Andean Trilogy<\/strong> was also applied, for example the <strong>Hanaq Pacha<\/strong> (the upper world), the <strong>Kay Pacha<\/strong> (this world), and the <strong>Ukh\u00fa Pacha<\/strong> (the lowe world), each world was represented by a God animal, for example the Condor for the upper world, this is why the Inca people built a temple dedicated to the Condor in Machu Picchu citadel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Underneath the temple of the Condor, there is a cave that probably worked as<strong> a prison<\/strong>, although this information cannot be confirmed because all what we know about Machu Picchu is from researches done in the 20th century, not Spanish chronicler documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However in most well-organized societies there had to be laws to keep order and justice, thus the Inca people also their own laws such as &#8220;Ama Sua&#8221; (Don&#8217;t steal), &#8220;Ama Q&#8217;ella&#8221; (Don&#8217;t be lazy), &#8220;Ama Llulla&#8221; (Don&#8217;t tell a lie) and anyone violent these laws had to be condemned to prison or even to death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-the-main-temple-or-wayrana\">4. The Main Temple or &#8220;Wayrana&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This temple is located on the highest part of the citadel, in the<strong> main plaza<\/strong>, this temple is known as the &#8220;<strong>Wayrana<\/strong>&#8221; in the Quechua language which means &#8220;<strong>a very windy place<\/strong>&#8220;, this is because the temple was built with Only three walls facing indoor the building, and thus leaving one of the sides without a wall where the wind enters from. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large advgb-dyn-10a3f655\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"8154\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtoursperu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/templos-de-machu-picchu-plaza-principal-1.jpg\" alt=\"Templos de Machu Picchu\" class=\"wp-image-8154\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Main Plaza<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large advgb-dyn-cf724008\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"8157\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtoursperu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/templos-de-machu-picchu-plaza-principal-2.jpg\" alt=\"Templos de Machu Picchu\" class=\"wp-image-8157\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> The Main Temple or &#8220;Wayrana&#8221; <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Indoor this temple there is a carved rock that could have represented the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chakana\" rel=\"nofollow\">Chakana or the Southern Cross<\/a>, due to the carving shape on high relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The temple was used to perform rituals dedicated mainly to the God <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Viracocha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Wiracocha<\/a><\/strong>, creator of everything in this universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No Inca temples or constructions were affected <strong>by earthquakes<\/strong>, not even Machu Picchu citadel, however there was a geological fault that happened in 600 years time and as a result of this planar fracture the &#8220;Wayrana temple&#8221; was altered <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-the-temple-of-the-three-windows\">5. The Temple of the Three Windows<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/freewalkingtoursperu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/templos-de-machu-picchu.jpg\" alt=\"Templos de Machu Picchu\" class=\"wp-image-8142\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It is an enclosure that is located in the very heart of the urban sector and is part of the <strong>main plaza <\/strong>of of Machu Picchu, this construction is a wonderful Inca masonry made by perfect stone polishing so that the can be assembled and stand on the floor for humdreds of years with the help of gravity instead of using clay mortar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-the-intihuatana\">6.
