Many are mistaken in thinking that Lima was nothing but a desert<\/strong> before the arrival of the Spanish. Others are also wrong in believing that the ancient civilisations left no trace<\/strong> of their development and greatness in this city of over 10 million people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This false idea\u2014that there\u2019s nothing pre-Hispanic to see in Lima\u2014often misleads travellers. When planning their trips, they usually leave out the capital\u2019s archaeological zones<\/strong> from their itineraries, convinced that all the important heritage is found only in Cusco<\/a>, the Andes, or perhaps the northern coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But don\u2019t worry\u2014you won\u2019t make that mistake<\/strong> after reading this text, in which you\u2019ll \u201cdiscover\u201d the Pachacamac Archaeological Sanctuary<\/a>. Its name comes from the Quechua words pacha<\/em> (meaning earth, world, universe, space, and time) and camac<\/em> (meaning creator, maker, or origin-giver).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcome to the oracle, the temples, and the pyramids built to worship Pachacamac\u2014the creator or maker of the earth and the universe<\/strong>. This god was so powerful that various peoples and cultures from the coast and the Andes, including the Incas, worshipped him from the 3rd<\/strong> to the 15th century AD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In pre-Hispanic times, pilgrims from distant regions<\/strong> made their way to this archaeological site in the Lur\u00edn district (31.5 km south of Lima\u2019s Historic Centre). They believed in and trusted the will of Pachacamac, whose totemic image was displayed in one of the chambers of this vast ceremonial complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t ignore<\/strong> the past or the native roots<\/strong> of Peru\u2019s main metropolis. Visit Pachacamac<\/a><\/strong>, explore its adobe walls, and gaze from its high points toward the sea horizon, where you\u2019ll see two small islands which, according to legend, were once a maiden and her young daughter<\/strong>. If you\u2019d like to uncover that story and many others, continue your journey to the capital\u2019s most important archaeological site<\/strong>\u2014an ancient city that is pre-Inca, colonial, republican, and globalised, waiting to reveal its millennia-old past<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pachacamac: Soul of the Earth<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oracle and deity, Pachacamac\u2014\u201cthe soul of the earth\u201d, one of the meanings of his name\u2014was regarded as the \u201ccreator and energiser of the universe<\/strong>\u201d. Thanks to his immense power, he could rejuvenate people<\/strong>, foresee the future, bring wellbeing to pilgrims, heal illnesses, and improve agricultural yields<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also had control or influence over the elements of nature\u2014such as water, fire, and even earthquakes. He was seen as the cause of tremors<\/strong>, but at the same time, he protected those who believed in him<\/strong>\u2014so long as they worshipped and honoured him with tributes and offerings.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

His influence endured over time. The various peoples and cultures who settled in Pachacamac upheld the sacred cult and respected the pilgrims. This was true for the Wari and later the Incas as well. \u201cThe Children of the Sun\u201d beautified the sanctuary<\/strong> and incorporated the coastal god into their own worldview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This attitude of openness was not shared by the Spanish<\/strong>. In 1533, the decline of Pachacamac began<\/a>. There were no more prophecies or pilgrims in the temples and pyramids\u2014but this was not the end of the story. Today, thousands of Peruvians and foreigners visit the sanctuary to discover the beliefs of the ancients<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Legend of Cavillaca<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

She was a stunningly beautiful woman\u2014so beautiful that the gods themselves wished to make her their wife<\/strong>. They all tried, yet none succeeded in winning the heart of Cavillaca. Frustrated by their failure, the wise god Cuniraya Wiracocha<\/strong> devised a cunning and deceitful plan to overcome the young woman\u2019s resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His strategy was based on trickery and magic<\/strong>. That\u2019s the only way to explain how the wise man transformed himself into a bird. In this form, he cleverly dropped a piece of fruit in front of the maiden. Surprised and delighted by the little bird\u2019s charm and skill, Cavillaca gladly ate the unexpected gift<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What she didn\u2019t know was that with every bite, her innocence was being stolen<\/strong>. Weeks later, she discovered she was pregnant<\/strong>. After giving birth to her daughter, she organised a gathering to uncover the identity of the father<\/strong>. But it was no use\u2014no one spoke a word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, no one\u2014not even Cuniraya Wiracocha. He didn\u2019t sit at the head table. Instead, dressed in rags, he waited quietly in a corner, hoping for a scrap of food to fall so he could eat it. That\u2019s when he heard Cavillaca tell her daughter, \u201cGo and find your father\u2014he is here among us.<\/em><\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The little girl obeyed and, without hesitation, crawled straight towards the ragged man in the corner<\/strong>. Horrified, Cavillaca scooped up her child and ran towards the sea, intending to drown herself in its waters<\/strong>. So desperate and swift was her escape that she didn\u2019t hear the wise man\u2019s explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As she fled, Cuniraya\u2014now dressed in a robe glittering with gold\u2014confessed that his aim had been to humble the vain maiden<\/strong>. But Cavillaca, unaware of the truth, threw herself into the Pacific with her child. The gods then transformed them into two stone islets as punishment<\/strong> for rejecting a man in rags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you visit Pachacamac, turn your gaze towards the sea on the horizon<\/strong>. There, you\u2019ll spot two rocky islets of different sizes. The larger one is Cavillaca<\/strong>, and the smaller one, her innocent daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Occupation of Pachacamac Over Time<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before the arrival of the Spanish in the Andean cultural sphere, Pachacamac was inhabited and administered by the following civilisations and peoples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lima Culture (250\u2013650 AD)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lima<\/a> culture were the first settlers and builders of Pachacamac<\/strong>. This society constructed the early temples in the religious sector. Their building techniques were very simple, using basic and rustic materials such as adobitos<\/strong>\u2014small, thin, rectangular adobe bricks. The architectural simplicity is due to a lack of technological exchange with other civilisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wari or Huari Culture (650\u20131200 AD)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wari, considered the first imperial organisation in the Andes<\/strong>, occupied the Lima territories\u2014including Pachacamac\u2014around 650 AD. During their dominance, new structures were erected, such as the Temple of Pachacamac<\/strong>, also known as the Painted Temple.
Excavations in the archaeological zone show that the Wari<\/a> defeated the Lima in battle, but despite their military victory, they preserved the traditions and artistic styles of the conquered people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ychsma or Ichma Culture (1200\u20131470 AD)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decline of the Wari in the Andes\u2014who were later defeated by the Incas<\/strong>\u2014paved the way for the expansion of the Ichma<\/a>, who took over Pachacamac in 1200 AD.
During their time, stepped pyramids<\/strong> with ramps and around 15 temples were built. They also established storage areas, fortified the Painted Temple<\/strong>, and increased the number of ceremonial patios for ritual activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inca Empire (1470\u20131535 AD)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After defeating the Wari in the Andes, the Incas began expanding towards the coast<\/strong> around 1450 AD. Under the skilled leadership of Tupac Yupanqui<\/a>, the \u201cChildren of the Sun\u201d forcefully or diplomatically annexed<\/strong> the territories of the Chim\u00fa<\/a>, Chincha<\/a>, and Ichma cultures, among others.
The successful campaign, which lasted until around 1470 AD, allowed the Incas to take control of Pachacamac<\/strong>. Like the Wari and Ichma before them, the Incas allowed the worship of \u201cthe soul of the earth\u201d to continue, while also introducing their own deities such as Inti (the Sun Father) and Wiracocha (the creator of the universe)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Incas built the Temple of the Sun and the Acllawasi<\/strong>\u2014the House of the Chosen Women. In this enclosure lived young women who were taught by the “mamaconas”<\/strong>. These elder women instructed them in honouring the gods and trained them in various manual skills such as weaving and cooking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the 19th century, excavations revealed important buildings<\/strong> and burial areas that, sadly, had been destroyed during colonial times<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Pachacamac: Pyramids and Much More <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The archaeological site of Pachacamac is divided into two clearly defined sectors. In both, you\u2019ll find stepped adobe pyramids<\/strong>, one of the most distinctive features of Pachacamac\u2014the deity worshipped and respected along the coast and in the Andes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Religious Sector<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here you\u2019ll see three truncated, stepped pyramids<\/strong>, along with the following temples: the Painted<\/a> Temple, which housed the sacred chamber and entrance of the idol of Pachacamac<\/strong>; the Temple of the Sun<\/a> (Punchao Cancha<\/em>), located at the top of the sanctuary facing the sea; and the Old or Ancient Temple<\/a>, a large platform built from millions of small adobe bricks (adobitos)<\/strong>. This area also contains a pre-Hispanic cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pyramid Sector  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This part of the site dates from the late 14th to early 15th centuries. For many years, researchers and archaeologists believed this area of pyramids and open spaces<\/strong> served as a religious centre, offering rest and lodging for pilgrims from distant communities<\/strong>.
However, archaeologist Peter Eekhout has a different view<\/strong>. After studying and excavating the area with his team, he concluded that the structures lacked the typical features of religious centres of the time. He believes the area was a residential zone<\/strong>, reserved for the ruling elites.
In this space, you\u2019ll be impressed by the secular stepped pyramids<\/strong> built with adobe blocks. You\u2019ll also find ramps and open areas that functioned as plazas or canchas<\/em><\/strong>, as they were called before the Spanish conquest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pachacamac Museum<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Established in 1965 as one of Peru\u2019s first site museums<\/strong>, its modern design is inspired by pre-Hispanic architectural styles. Covering an area of approximately 1,000 m\u00b2, its exhibition halls display \u201cthe cultural sequence of Pachacamac<\/strong> from around 200 AD to the Inca settlement in 1470,\u201d as explained on the museum\u2019s official website<\/a>.
Thanks to its significance, the museum is referred to as the \u201cgateway to the sanctuary,\u201d as it preserves \u201cthe site\u2019s most important archaeological finds<\/strong>,\u201d including \u201cthe idol of Pachacamac<\/strong> and the ornamental textile doorway adorned with spondylus<\/em> shells,\u201d discovered in the Painted Temple by Alberto Giesecke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opening Hours and Admission Fees<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From Tuesday to Saturday<\/strong>, the Pachacamac Archaeological Sanctuary welcomes visitors from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.<\/strong> (ticket offices are open until 4:30 p.m.). On Sundays<\/strong>, it is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.<\/strong> (ticket offices close at 3:30 p.m.).
Please note that on the first Sunday of each month, admission is free<\/strong> for Peruvian citizens and foreign residents with a valid DNI or residency card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
