HIGHLIGHTS

You need to be at the Puno bus terminal (between Jirón 1 de Mayo and Costanera Avenue) at 6:30 in the morning, where you will board a tourist bus that departs for Cusco at 7:00.
The day before, we will send you detailed information so you can check in at the bus terminal.
Before booking or travelling, please carefully read the “Details and Notes” tab to avoid any setbacks or misunderstandings.
From Puno to Pucará
After 2 hours of travel on an asphalted road (107 km from Puno), the bus will stop in Pucará (3910 m a.s.l.). In this town of the Lampa province, you will visit the Pukara Lithic Museum.
Pukara Lithic Museum
Before the rise of the Incas in Andean history, various cultures and kingdoms developed around Lake Titicaca and the Altiplano, including the Pukara culture (500 to 350 AD).
The Pucará Museum displays monoliths and sculptures that will amaze you with their iconography. The main pieces represent fearsome figures, such as the Devourer and Hatun Ñakaj (also known as the Decapitator).
The six rooms of the museum showcase lithic pieces, jars, plates, large urns, huacos, and keros. After your visit, take a look at the Pucará bulls, one of the most popular handicrafts in Peru, with colonial origins.
From Pucará to La Raya
The Route of the Sun continues towards La Raya, the mountain pass that marks the regional border between Cusco and Puno, and the highest point on this journey (4438 m a.s.l.). Estimated time of bus ride: 1 hour 30 minutes.
La Raya Viewpoint
It’s the perfect place to admire the Andean and highland geography. At the La Raya pass, there is a small train station, and groups of artisans will be waiting to offer their best work.
Take advantage of the bus stop to photograph Mount Chimboya, whose summit is often covered in snow, the herds of alpacas grazing in the area, and also the road sign marking the altitude of La Raya.
Buffet lunch in Maranganí
Your first stop in the Cusco region will be a tourist restaurant in Maranganí (3709 m a.s.l.), where a delicious buffet lunch awaits you. The travel time from La Raya to this district in the Canchis province is 30 minutes.
Raqchi Archaeological Park
Your adventure doesn’t end with lunch. After the buffet, the bus will head towards the Temple of Wiracocha — “the creator of the universe” in Andean worldview — and the other structures of the Raqchi archaeological complex, located in the district of San Pedro (Canchis province).
After 40 minutes, you’ll reach your destination, where you’ll be amazed by the stone columns and walls up to 14 meters high of the Temple of Wiracocha. This is yet another example of the Incas’ architectural prowess.
Take advantage of the stop at Raqchi (3444 m a.s.l.) to visit other areas of the archaeological site, such as the circular colcas (more than 200), used for food storage, the Inca barracks, and the priestly temple.
From Raqchi to Andahuaylillas
From the Inca heritage of Raqchi to the colonial art of Andahuaylillas (3121 m a.s.l.). Back on the bus for a 1 hour 30-minute journey (80 km) to the Church of San Pedro Apóstol, a monument of faith located in the province of Quispicanchi.
Colonial Church of Andahuaylillas
During the colonial era, a religious artistic movement emerged that incorporated elements of Andean cosmovision. Inca gods, tutelary animals, and sacred mountains found a place in the representations of biblical scenes.
This movement, known as Andean Baroque, is displayed in all its splendour in the Church of San Pedro Apóstol in Andahuaylillas. The church was built in the 17th century, and its interior showcases oils, sculptures, and frescoes by indigenous artists.
Cleric Juan Pérez de Bocanegra was the driving force behind this treasure of faith, where there are no empty spaces—everything is perfectly decorated. Some colloquially refer to this church as the “Sistine Chapel of America.”
From Andahuaylillas to Cusco
The final stretch of the Route of the Sun connects Andahuaylillas with Cusco (3400 m a.s.l.). The distance between the two points is 43 kilometres, and the approximate travel time is 1 hour 20 minutes.
Ending place
At 17:30, your bus will arrive at a private terminal in the Cusco Industrial Park (Avenida Las Américas H-16). Our driver will be there to welcome you to the city and take you to your hotel.
