Long before the Incas expanded their territories to the Collao Plateau and Lake Titicaca, the Aymara Kingdoms sowed the seeds of autonomous development in the Highlands. Those were the Collas, Pacajes, and Lupacas who laid the foundations of an ancient people whose roots remain alive today.
Neither the Incas—“the children of the Sun”—nor the Spaniards who crossed the ocean to “conquer” America, were able to destroy the Aymara culture, which knew how to adapt to changes in order to preserve its beliefs, language, music, and more.
Today, in Peru, they are one of the largest indigenous peoples in the country. The majority live in six provinces of the Puno region and in communities in Moquegua and Tacna. Throughout their long and historic journey across the Altiplano, they left indelible archaeological and cultural traces.

From Puno to Chucuito by road
We will depart at around 8:30 in the morning towards Chucuito (3,887 m a.s.l), Chucuito is located 18 kilometres south of Puno, the road is paved. Travel time: 25 minutes.
Visita al Inca Uyo de Chucuito
It is an enigmatic archaeological complex of Lupaca and Inca origin. Known as the Temple of Fertility due to the phallic sculptures found inside, it is located next to the colonial church of Santo Domingo, the oldest in the Altiplano (16th century).
The history of Chucuito is fascinating. In pre-Hispanic times, it was the main settlement of the Aymara Lupaca kingdom, and during the Viceroyalty period, it became the site of the Caja Real, a center for fiscal control and tax collection.
Visit to the Waru Waru of Caritamaya — at about 10:00
Before the arrival of the Spanish and the expansion of the Inca Empire, the Aymaras created an open-air agricultural laboratory that allowed them to manage water, improve soil, select the best seeds, and create diverse microclimates.
It may sound incredible, but it’s real, as you’ll discover at the Waru Waru of Caritamaya (you will arrive around 10:00). At the site, you’ll be amazed by the circular furrows separated by a flow of water. This system is characteristic of the Altiplano.
During the visit, your guide will explain the history, importance, and significance of the Waru Waru.
Visit to the Chullpas of Molloco
Your adventure in Aymara lands will continue at the pre-Hispanic necropolis of Molloco. In this place, the Lupacas and Incas built four large chullpas (three rectangular and one circular) to bury their deceased.
The Aymara word chullpa is translated in various ways. The most common meaning refers to the pre-Hispanic stone and adobe funeral structures typical of the Altiplano. It also means “a body wrapped in a woven bundle.”
From Molloco to Aramu Muru by road
The next stop is the Aramu Muru portal in Ilave (Collao Province). The distance from Molloco is 33 kilometers, which takes approximately 35 minutes to travel. Around noon, you will arrive at the final attraction of your route.
Visit to the Aramu Muru portal
Carved in low relief on a 7-meter-high stone wall, this portal is shrouded in enigmas and mysteries. Also known as Wilca Uta or the Gate of the Devil, some believe it is an interdimensional entrance.
It is located at 3,827 m a.s.l., the exact purpose of this imposing stone portal remains unknown. One hypothesis suggests it was an architectural project of the Incas that was interrupted by the Spanish conquistadors.
The name Aramu Muru refers to a legendary Inca priest who, according to the story, arrived at the portal with a “solar disc” that was actually an interdimensional key. By using it, he passed through the stone, forever leaving this world.
