Dare to venture beyond Lake Titicaca and the archaeological complex of Sillustani. Don’t settle for exploring just the Aymara and Quechua zones. Embark on new paths that will reveal Puno’s hidden treasures and its many wonders.

We offer an innovative and less-travelled route where you’ll discover a “Gothic City”, delve into the history of the pre-Inca Kallawaya culture, and unwind in medicinal hot springs.

Along this journey, you’ll also witness the Carabaya mountain range from the Oquepuño Pass, spot herds of alpacas, groups of vicuñas, guanacos, and even vizcachas, among other incredible sights.

HIGHLIGHTS

Meeting place

We will pick you up at about 03:30 in the morning from your hotel located in Puno’s historic centre.

If you are staying in another area of the city, a meeting point will be arranged.

For more information about this tour, please refer to the Details and Notes tab.

Visit to the Oquepuño Pass Viewpoint

Before arriving in Macusani, the vehicle will make a stop at the Oquepuño Pass (4,873 m a.s.l.). Be sure to bundle up before getting out to enjoy a panoramic view of your destination. From this viewpoint, you’ll see the peaks of the Carabaya mountain range.

The pass, where the Lord of Oquepuño is worshipped, is located 234 km from Puno. The journey takes approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes along the Interoceanic Highway. At times, this spot is covered by a blanket of snow.

Breakfast in Macusani

You’ll arrive at around 8:00 in the city of Macusani to enjoy your breakfast. Macusani is the capital of the Carabaya province.

Guided tour of the Kallawaya Museum

The Kallawayas – an Altiplano people that emerged during the height of the Tiwanaku culture (6th to 11th centuries AD) – were considered by the Inca as “traveling doctors” for venturing into the forest in search of medicinal plants.

This culture that has developed in both Peru and Bolivia, had one of its civilizing centers in what is now the province of Carabaya. You will see and confirm this during your visit to the museum, located in the city of Macusani.

From Macusani to the Gothic City by road

After learning about the historical roots of Carabaya, you will return to the vehicle to head towards the Gothic City of Pacunasa. The journey lasts about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Along the way, you’ll see alpacas, and with a bit of luck, you may spot vicuñas and vizcachas.

Exploration in the Gothic City

Imagination runs wild at 4,885 m a.s.l. in the Pacunasa Stone Forest, where its volcanic rock formations, rising towards the sky, become the “buildings” of an astonishing Gothic city.

The rock formations were “sculpted” by the wind over thousands of years. In Pacunasa, you’ll not only witness these “Gothic constructions”, but if you look closely, you’ll notice some rocks resemble dancers, owls, parrots, and vicuñas.

Exploring the Gothic City will require some effort. You’ll need to walk for about half an hour (2.5 km) to get closer to the forest. Take your time and pace yourself to avoid being affected by the altitude.

Visit to the Acora Hot Springs

The hot springs of the Acora Qhomerccocha community are located very close to the Gothic City (10 to 15 minutes away). A haven of relaxing and healing waters that will relieve muscle pain and other ailments.

There are five individual pools are located near an alpaca farming area.

Lunch in Macusani

After the hot springs, we will return to Macusani (20 km) for lunch and to recharge before heading back to Puno. Alternatively, we can provide you with a box lunch (it will depend on the tourism season).

Return to Puno

As evening falls, and after relieving your fatigue in the hot springs and recharging with lunch or a box lunch, you will return to the vehicle to begin your journey back. Settle in comfortably, as you will arrive in Puno at night.

Dinner (optional)

As the arrival in Puno is scheduled for 21:00, there will be a brief stop in the village of San Antón (Azángaro province). Take advantage of the pause to have dinner or grab a drink (not included in the tour cost).

Ending place

Your tour will end at approximately 21:00. Our transport will drop you off in a central area, close to Puno’s Main Square (Plaza Mayor or Plaza de Armas). From this point, you can easily return to your hotel.

If you decide to book the private tour, we will drop you off at the door of your hotel.
