Who are the Quechuas? That is perhaps the first question you’ll ask your guide as you leave Puno, heading towards ancient pre-Hispanic chullpas, a church that is a treasure of faith, a grove of titancas —the world’s largest bromeliad— and a museum where you’ll discover Hatun Ñakaj, the fearsome Decapitator.

Yes, who are the Quechuas? Are they all the indigenous peoples of the Andes, or just the “children of the Sun” who consolidated the Inca Empire? And while you await your guide’s answer, the vehicle that left the “Altiplano City” around 7:30 in the morning approaches the Sillustani archaeological site.

The first stop on a tour designed for you to explore the main attractions of Puno’s Quechua-rooted cities and villages. In this experience that awaits you every day of the year, you’ll visit Lampa, the “Pink City,” and the district of Pucará, famous for its ceramic bulls.

From Puno to Sillustani by road

Around 7:30 h, the tourist vehicle will depart towards the Sillustani archaeological complex (Atuncolla district). The distance from Puno is 33 km, which will take approximately 30 minutes to cover.

Guided visit to the chullpas of Sillustani

In the 13th century, the Collas, an Altiplano culture predating the Incas, began the construction of several towers and funerary structures on a plateau at 3,902 m a.s.l., offering a magnificent view of Lake Umayo.

Sillustani is a place of both scenic beauty and archaeological heritage, where 91 chullpas, or funerary towers made of stone, stand as monuments to immortality. These towers vary in shape, characteristics, and size.

The circular chullpa of Lagarto is the most representative of the complex. Named after the carved image of this animal, it stands at a height of 12 meters, with a base diameter of 7.17 meters.

From Sillustani to Lampa by road

Your day on the Quechua Route continues with a land transfer to Lampa, the capital of the province of the same name. The distance between Sillustani and the “Pink City” is 60 kilometers, which will take approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes to cover.

Visit to the main attractions of Lampa

Founded in 1569, Lampa is a monumental city located at 3,892m a.s.l.. Among its colonial constructions, the Santiago Apóstol temple stands out. Built in Baroque style with a beautiful pink sillar façade, the construction of this temple began in 1675.

It was Declared a Historic Monument in 1941, it houses valuable paintings from the Cusco School of Art and two replicas of Michelangelo’s Pietà, the famous sculpture in which Mary holds the body of Jesus after his death.

The replicas are the only ones in the world.

What else will you see in Lampa:

  • The ossuary and catacombs of the Santiago Apóstol temple.
  • The Municipal Library, which contains old and valuable historical works and volumes donated by Enrique Torres Belón (1887-1969), a distinguished figure from Lampa who presided over the Senate of Peru in 1957 and 1958.
  • A grove of titancas or puya Raimondi, the world’s largest bromeliad. Native to the Andes, they can reach up to 12 meters in height, and their flowering occurs when the plant is between 80 and 100 years old.

From Lampa to Pucará by road

The excursion to the Land of the Quechuas doesn’t end in Lampa. After exploring its attractions, you’ll return to the vehicle and head towards the district of Pucará. The journey between these two towns takes approximately 45 minutes.

Lunch in Pucará — at about 13:00

Before continuing with the sightseeing, your guide will recommend a place for lunch in Pucará, the district you’ll arrive at around 13:30. You can choose the restaurant and the menu. Please note that lunch is not included in the cost of the tour.

Guided tour of the Pucará Lithic Museum

Between the years 500 and 380 AD, the Pukará culture developed, considered the first great civilization of the Altiplano. Among its archaeological legacy, the ceremonial center of Qalasaya and the lithic sculptures with religious iconography stand out.

In the six halls of the museum, monoliths and zoomorphic sculptures are displayedm they were recovered from the archaeological excavations at Qalasaya, located on the outskirts of the current town. During your visit, pay close attention to the following pieces:

  • The Rain or Lightning Stela: It measures 2 meters tall and features a figure with a puma head and a fish body.
  • The Decapitator Monolith or Hatun Ñakaj: A figure holding a human head in its right hand, with its back decorated with human faces, revealing some of the details that expose its cruelty.
  • The Devourer: This depicts a naked man chewing a child.

Return to Puno

The adventure comes to an end, and before returning to Puno, we recommend buying a Pucará bull, one of the most popular handicrafts in Peru. Now, hop back into the vehicle and get ready for a journey that will take approximately 2 hours.

Ending place — at about 18:00

As night falls (around 18:00), we will arrive in Puno. The vehicle will drop you off near the main square, Plaza Mayor or Plaza de Armas. From this central area, you won’t have any trouble heading to your hotel or accommodation.,
