Walking at over 4000 metres above sea level in search of seven mountain lakes that will amaze you with their whimsical shapes and the colours of their waters is a tempting proposition for hiking enthusiasts and a great challenge for travellers in good physical condition looking to embark on a trekking adventure.
HIGHLIGHTS
Meeting point
We will pick you up from your hotel at 4:30, this applies only to accommodations located in the Historic Centre of Cusco (3400 m above sea level). If you are staying in another part of the city, we will arrange a convenient and safe meeting point for you.
If you need more information about the trek to the 7 Ausangate Lakes, please check the Notes and Details tab.
From Cusco to Pacchanta by road
When the group of travellers is complete on the bus, you will depart towards the Pacchanta community in the Ocongate district (Quispicanchi province). Travel time: 3 hours. Altitude: 4300 m above sea level.
Breakfast in Pacchanta
Tomarás un desayuno local a las 7:30 horas de la mañana en un restaurante local de la comunidad indígena de Pachanta. Te recomendamos tomar una bebida caliente —anímate a probar el mate de coca— para espantar el frío andino.
You will have a local breakfast at 7:30 in the morning at a local restaurant in the indigenous community of Pacchanta. We recommend having a hot drink — feel free to try coca tea — to ward off the Andean cold.
Heading to the lagoons
You will begin your hike along the challenging trails of Mount Ausangate (6384 m in height), one of the sacred and protective mountains of Cusco, according to the Andean worldview. Apu is a Quechua word meaning deity.
Take advantage of your walk to admire the mountainous landscape and capture excellent photographs. If you feel breathless while walking, slow your pace until you can breathe comfortably. Neither your guide nor the group will rush you. You will walk at your own pace. Keep in mind that acclimatising to the altitude is key during this trek.
Arrival at the Seven Lagoons
You will reach the first of the seven lagoons at approximately 9:30. Its name is Pucacocha (4500 m above sea level), and its waters are chocolate-coloured. Admire it and take a moment to rest. You deserve it after the effort of climbing.
You will then continue your trek to see the following lagoons:**
- Patacocha Lagoon (4620 m above sea level): The clarity and transparency of its waters are its main attraction.
- Alqacocha Lagoon (4650 m above sea level): It will offer you beautiful views of Ausangate.
- Qomercocha Lagoon (4655 m above sea level): You’ll love its turquoise green waters.
- Orco Otorongo Lagoon (4620 m above sea level): Its shape resembles that of a male jaguar (otorongo).
- China Otorongo Lagoon (4550 m above sea level): It is the “female jaguar.”
- Azul Cocha Lagoon (4500 m above sea level): As its name suggests, its waters are intensely blue.
Return to Pacchanta
Al terminar tu recorrido en las 7 lagunas, retornarás a Pacchanta por otro camino. Si mantienes un paso y ritmo adecuado estarás de vuelta en la comunidad de Pacchanta a las 13:30 h, aproximadamente.
At the end of your tour of the Seven Lagoons, you will return to Pacchanta via a different route. If you maintain a steady pace, you should be back in the Pacchanta community by approximately 1:30.
Lunch
In Pacchanta, you will have lunch at a local restaurant that offers traditional cuisine and vegetarian options. Lunch time: approximately 13:45.
Relax in the hot springs
At the end of a trek, immersing yourself in a thermal pool is truly a delight. That’s what you’ll experience at the Pacchanta hot springs. Its seven pools are fed by the warm waters of a spring from the Vilcanota mountain range.
The visit to the hot springs is subject to the estimated timings in the itinerary. If your group doesn’t take too long to go to and return from the lagoons, you’ll have no problem enjoying these baths located at the foot of Ausangate.
If you’re an experienced hiker and want to ensure your rejuvenating bath in Pacchanta, opt for a private tour, so you’re not dependent on the leisurely pace of your occasional companions.
Return to Cusco
Whether or not you visit the hot springs, the transport will depart for Cusco from Pacchanta at 16:30. There are no scheduled stops on the return journey, so you can take advantage of the bus’s comfort to rest.
End location
The arrival in Cusco is scheduled for 20:00. The bus will drop you off very close to the Plaza de Armas. If your tour is private, we will take you to your hotel. In this case, the arrival time will not vary much.
