The Presbítero cemetery was inaugurated on May 31, 1808 by Viceroy Abascal, it was the first general cemetery in the city of Lima. It currently has 20 hectares that are distributed in more than 600 tombs and mausoleums, 220,000 niches that reflect the style of architecture that characterized Lima in the 19th and 20th centuries. You will visit famous tombs of the presidents of Peru, heroes of the Pacific War, poets, writers, suicides, etc. — see more information on the tour itinerary.

The catacombs of San Francisco date back to the colonial period and it was the official cemetery for the Catholics and wealthy people of Lima; more than 36,000 people were buried inside these catacombs during the Spanish occupation period in Peru.

ITINERARY

The itinerary can always change because of strikes and festivals; if so, your Guide will do alternative routes. The order of the visit of the attractions may change. If you book a private tour, the following itinerary can be customized.

Meeting Place — 8:00 approx.

We will meet at your hotel. Previous coordination with the reservations departament is requiered.

Transfer from your hotel to the Historic Center of Lima

This transfer and all other transfers will be made by vehicle.

Historic Center of Lima — exterior visit

Visit the historic center of Lima, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991; you will explore the Plaza Mayor and its most emblematic buildings such as the cathedral, the archiepiscopal palace, the Oidor’s house, the Government Palace, the municipal palace and the ornamental water fountain dating back to 1651.

Catacombs of the San Francisco church — interior visit

Transfer from the Historic Center to the Presbítero Maestro Cemetery

Presbítero Matías Maestro Cemetery Museum — interior visit

This historical monument is located in Barrios Altos close to the historic center, it was ordered to be built in 1808 by Viceroy José Fernando de Abascal and designed by the architect, sculptor and painter Matías Maestro. The original name of this place was “Cementerio General de Lima” and it was changed later on by the name of its architect to honor him. At this cemetery rest the remains of famous Peruvians such as:

  • Heroes of the Pacific War against Chile: Miguel Grau, Francisco Bolognesi, Alfonso Ugarte and Andrés Avelino Cáceres
  • Former Peruvian Presidents: José de la Riva Agüero, Manuel Pardo y Lavalle, Augusto B. Leguía, Nicolás de Piérola, etc.
  • Writers: Ricardo Palma, Abraham Valdelomar, José Santos Chocano, Ciro Alegria, etc.
  • Scientists: Eduardo de Habich and Scientist Pedro Paulet
  • The miraculous child: Niño Ricardito
